Conversion of Model Farm
Brentor, Tavistock 2004
This farm near Tavistock is Grade II listed and had been a Duke of Bedford model farm. It consists of 11 buildings, originally in a variety of farming related structures ranging from a mill with surviving wheel to a 'dung house' in the centre of the complex. The barns, stables and mill were carefully restored and converted into dwellings, most of which benefit from internal galleries and exposed roof structures, which exploit the ambience of “living in a barn”. The exceptional internal open space of the 'dung house' was converted to an internal swimming pool, leaving the historic structure effectively unchanged.
Large rooflights make up for lack of existing openings in some buildings, and the internal floor levels have been raised up to enable views out. This way historic floors were left unaffected by the conversion.
